At the young age of five and a half, Saverio Pisano began his training as a fashion designer in Italy.  Starting with the basics and studying with the greatest attention, Pisano developed his talent in the great cities of Paris and Milan.  Later on, upon realizing an opportunity to expand his artistry, he moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he spent decades of his career dressing first ladies, diplomats, and high society, and becoming known for his trademark timeless designs.

During his time in Buenos Aires and wanting to share his knowledge and understanding of creating exceptional garments, he founded a prominent fashion design school called “PISANO”.  He has written a well-respected book on pattern making, a skill he considers essential to timeless style,  Today, Pisano is focused on the Los Angeles fashion scene with his unique ability to create distinguished and everlasting style for women and men through his custom tailoring business.

While much of fashion can often focus on women and their ability to transform themselves with a whirlwind of styles, Pisano feels that it is men who should be reinventing themselves through their wardrobe.  “As the season turns to Autumn, it is a time to think about change and to be mindful on achieving our goals.  What you wear has the power to help transform your confidence,” says the designer.

Men Should Not Dress Like Soldiers

“People think that soldiers are the ones wearing a uniform. They all look identical and wear the same standard clothing for the duration of their service.  The truth is that men have fallen into this pattern too.  If you look back in history, men’s clothing has not changed very much. Especially when you compare it to women’s styles!” Pisano explains.

Fashion is a way to express who you are and what makes you different. People should not feel that they have to be like everyone else.  Pisano explains, “Men should experiment with colors, patterns, and lengths of jackets, etc.  Men shouldn’t settle for something that is merely average. They should be passionate about what they wear and how it fits,” he says.

Think About Investment Pieces

Pisano believes that even in uncertain times, such as what is happening now, people gravitate to custom clothing because the garments are universally flattering, comfortable, and make excellent investments.  “Throughout my career, people have always told me that my custom creations look timeless. That they cannot put a date, or even a decade, on when they first wore the piece.  This is the ultimate compliment, because not only does the clothing look new, but the style is timeless and unique enough to be of its own moment.”

Build Your Confidence

Pisano believes that when a person loves what he is wearing, it gives him a sense of empowerment and confidence.  “Women have long discovered what men are learning now. That the way clothing fits makes you feel better about yourself.  When I work with my clients, we are able to enhance the physical features that he likes and distract from areas that he feels self-conscious about. This is why I spent many years studying anatomy.”

Discover Dressing Up Again

“I believe that people have become tired of staying in sweatpants and pajamas all day. The experts agree that in order to have an efficient day, you must start as you mean to continue.  Get up, do your exercise, and get dressed!”  Pisano continues, “Because of the level of comfort custom clothing brings, many feel that these investment pieces make a good impression on Zoom and when no one is watching.”

Remember: Couture Means Details

“One of the fastest ways to understand the quality of a jacket, suit, dress, or any item of clothing, is to take notice of the fabric pattern,” he explains.  “Look at the line that runs from the lapel and see if it is continuous. If you are not sure, remember that it should look artistically correct.  It should feel balanced.  Stripes should be connected, and squares or patterns should align and meet each other in a pleasing way.  This should be the case for patterns that go in horizonal or vertical directions.”

Embrace Color

For too long, men have been wearing navy, black and gray.  “They should experiment with color, patters and fabric because it is the best way to stand out and get noticed. We know that colors symbolize different things in gemstones and flowers, like love, friendship, and kindness. This should be translated into the colors that men wear. Many men don’t know that red is one of the colors that attract women!”

Patterns Must Be Perfect

It’s very difficult to take a design that was made on a mannequin and create the perfect pattern, even in the age of computers and technology. “If you don’t know the real technique, there’s no other remedy!” says Pisano. “My technique is the fruit of many years of fashion experience and study which have been used in both Italy and Paris. My book about patterns, ‘The Tailoring Bible’ is a proven system on creating the perfect pattern which is essential to a garment with an amazing fit.  It’s not about making a lot of changes; it’s about getting it right the first time. This saves the client time because he can have a perfectly fitting garment in two fittings instead of five like many other custom tailors.”
